Besides flowers, you can raise fruits, mushrooms, and even rice grains! Your options will change depending on the season, so when starting out, pick whichever season seems like it'd have something you like!

There's nothing you HAVE to do, but there are plenty of things you CAN do. Raise your flowers and crops by planting then watering them, then relax until it's time to harvest.
